This week was about David being anointed king after Saul proved to be a bad one. We also learned about "Gowiaf" (Goliath to those without speech issues, haha). Grace was fascinated by the David and Goliath story. She kept asking me to read about the giant. I hope she is always so eager to hear about the word of God!
I consider myself to be a pretty laid-back and well balanced person. However, we all have our insecurities, right? I'll be honest; even though I do lessons with Grace and think she is advanced for her age, sometimes I hear about what other kids are doing and think I should be doing more. That's completely ridiculous. I was convicted about the whole comparing kids' developmental milestones/abilities at bible study last week.
I have bible study on Thursday mornings (so refreshing for my soul!) and have been going since Grace was born. We break into small groups after the lesson, which is taught by the awesome Margie Milner! In small group last week, Margie said it was crucial that we remember the most important thing about our children is that they have FAITH. Y'all, that hit me like Goliath being struck by a stone! I've been jealous over things that surely don't matter in Heaven. Of course I want Grace to learn and succeed, but is that ultimately the most important thing she learns on this earth? One morning Grace was asking me over and over to read the story about the giant while I was trying to get her to focus on letter sounds...something is wrong with that picture. BIG TIME.
My almost 3 year old daughter does not need to read or write fluently. Actually, it's not even developmentally appropriate, but my actions have been showing that I am more concerned about her learning than her faith. I know she's little and we pray she'll profess faith one day but if I don't show her the important things now, she won't exemplify them later. So, I'll definitely continue doing school with Grace and teaching her things because she enjoys it. I just needed to check myself about priorities! I guess confession is becoming a regular occurrence on this blog :)
Marshmallow poppers: cup, rubber band, part of a balloon, and a marshmallow
This was supposed to go with the David and Goliath lesson. You put a marshmallow in the cup, pull back the balloon end, and the marshmallow pops out of the cup (sort of a like a slingshot). It was kind of a dud...or at least I thought so. I realized the marshmallows weren't really shooting out that great, but Grace SURE enjoyed "cleaning" them up.
Watercolor Fizz Paint: baking soda, water, food coloring, cups, vinegar, syringe
This has been one of my favorite paint activities to date! Start by mixing colored water with baking soda until it gets thick.
Grace wanted to do a bow activity because of Minnie Moue, so I cut out bows that ended up looking like butterflies.
Then, Grace painted the bows.
She enjoyed a new texture to paint with.
Next, I pulled out some apple cider vinegar I didn't even know I had. I liked it because the color was light.
Lastly, Grace squirted the vinegar onto the paint and VOILA! It fizzed. It was SO cool!
Fizzing
Pepper Shamrock Painting: Grace and Wesley go to pre-school two days a week while I go into the office. This has by far been the most creative craft Grace has come home with!
There is our attempt at a King David hand print craft.
David (with the ham slingshot) and Goliath (with the carrot sword) snack
This was cute because Grace liked picking out the rocks and gluing them on. Simple.
After gluing rocks onto the paper (above), Grace wanted to glue some more. I quickly found this tooth activity on Pinterest, so we gave it a shot. She glued the pieces on nicely. 13 teeth later, she was done. Works for me!
I don't know why the picture is rotated but I don't feel like messing with it. This was our first attempt at handwriting! Grace wanted to write with my pen, so I thought we'd give it a try. I wrote a letter at a time and asked her to copy me. I think she did great! We basically wrote the letters in her name. We'll keep practicing this because it's good for her grip, but I don't want to force anything so we'll do as much as she likes!
I get primarily all of my ideas off Pinterest and pin them onto the Bible Journey Curriculum board:
I reference that board a TON so please feel free to check it out! There are soooooo many fantastic ideas out there.
