If you follow our family blog you know we have A LOT going on. The Bible Journey curriculum has taken a back seat to most things in our lives right now. Isn't it ironic how we put God in the backseat when things get busy? No, I'm not saying the curriculum represents God in any form or symbol, but it made me realize where I put God on my priority list as life gets busy.
I am trying to be intentional about spending time in the word with Grace. It's not a matter of not having time, it's a matter of me MAKING the time. No excuses. Life has gotten more busy, but teaching Grace about the bible shouldn't suffer. So, instead of doing a bunch of planned and crafted bible activities, we have just focused on the stories. That's what the bible is, after all, a bunch of small stories God uses to tell one big story. You see, where we currently are in Grace's bible is the Last Supper and the crucifixion. What am I supposed to do with those stories? Do I pull out some band aids to illustrate Jesus had a lot of "boo boos" (as Grace calls them)? I'm sure there are creative and meaningful things I could have done so know that I am not ragging on anyone that has done these things, but I didn't do them this time. We just read the stories.
When I read the crucifixion story to Grace, she had some questions:
1. What did Jesus do wrong?
2. Why did those people give him boo boos?
3. Why is Jesus crying?
4, Mommy, why are you crying?
I have never cried when reading the crucifixion story in all my years of reading or hearing it. That's a sad thing for me to admit...that I haven't been moved to tears over someone dying for me when they did nothing. When I got to the end of this story I cried for the first time ever. Grace's questions and the way the Jesus Storybook Bible explains the crucifixion just hit me all at once. What a powerful story that should be told in all months of the year, not just April (or March, depending on the year). I hope you take the time to read the Jesus Storybook Bible. It has been the most helpful way to teach Grace about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
Since Grace is in pre-school three days a week, I feel better about slacking off with our creative crafts and activities :) We were able to get some learning time in together, just the two of us. Oh, and keep in mind these activities spanned over almost a month. Better late than never!
I saw this idea on Pinterest over a year ago and we just got around to finally doing it. It's a barn yard with a sheet,, horse, and duck made out of hand prints.
This idea came to me as I was recycling one day. I decided to start cutting out letters to glue on and made an alphabet for Grace. We didn't find all of the letters but she loved gluing the ones we did find onto the paper.
I forgot we did do one bible craft! This was supposed to go with the story of Zacchaeus since he climbed up into a tree to see Jesus. We just didn't draw a man in the tree. The tree is an arm/hand print of Grace with both of our fingerprints for leaves.
Practicing drawing circles around cool stickers
Grace found these in her craft bin. I think they came from a Chick-Fil-A kids meal.
Grace's tracing skills have improved a lot! I usually write something in a light colored marker or crayon and then she will trace with a darker color.
I don't even remember why we were painting, but here's proof we did! :)
Where are my Trader Joes fans?? They have these cool alphabet cookies that we have used to practice letter sounds (and eating, of course!).
Grace is obsessed with glow sticks. We have "lights off" bath time with glow sticks and she even likes to sleep with them. I have no idea why she is wearing a bow in the bath tub, haha.
We went to an apple festival in town, (I'll post about that in our family update soon) so it was only fitting to bake an apple pie.
It was SO delicious.
Motor skill race: play doh, spaghetti noodles, and Cheerios
Whoever fills their noodle up the fastest, wins!
In October we will start writing letters instead of using magnets. I let Grace write the ones you see on September. I think writing the letters will be good practice!
