Kitchen Tile Backsplash Project

When we found out we matched into residency here in Winston Salem, we were beyond thrilled!  Many blessings have come since then...one being my parents gifting us a kitchen tile backsplash to "vamp" up our kitchen.  Our weekend was overtaken by my dad and Jimmy working steadfast in the kitchen.  The girls (my mom, Grace and I) were in charge of having fun and staying out of the house as much as possible :)

LOVE our kitchen's new look :)

Start time: 8:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26th
End time: 12:00 p.m. Monday, May 28th
*the boys worked from 8:30 a.m. (including errands to Lowe's) until 5:00 p.m. each day
Materials needed: tile saw, drill, tile pieces, grout, mortar, sponges, backer board, nails, screws and some beer :)
Moods: happy, frustrated, exhausted...
Injuries: cut on arm, cut on finger and sore backs for both boys

Trips to Lowe's Home Improvement
*not including the trips dad and mom made in Columbia purchasing the tile at Home Depot and a few other things
Trip 1: found a certain type of backer board dad was looking for, some small black tile pieces for the stove area
Trip 2: dad returned a few parts
Trip 3: had to find some longer screws for the outlet plates, bought some black outlet plate covers and black outlets since the previous color was white, got a few more small black tile pieces and a spacer to go behind the outlets since they had to be pulled out some once the tile was put on the wall
Trip 4: (Home Depot): Jimmy had to go get some more tile (praise the Lord there was still some at the store...basically the tile was advertised as being 12x12 but when you actually measured the square, it was more like 10x12 which meant we didn't originally have enough) and some mortar

While the boys were working hard, the girls had some fun!  Saturday we went to Old Salem to check out the new Farmer's Market.  They had some great stuff but we just bought some sweets.  Old Salem happened to be having a BMW car show so we got to look at some old cars and chill out/snack under a shaded tree.  We brought some barbque back to the boys for lunch.  Next on the agenda was a trip to the mall after Grace's afternoon nap.  She got to play in the play area for the first time AND eat a whole white chocolate chip cookie.  After looking in a few stores we went home to grill out some veggies and chicken kabobs for dinner, yumo!  On Sunday we took Grace to the park to swing and then ran by Whole Foods to get delicious aged meat steaks for the boys as a reward for all their hard work.  Yes, we went by the bakery section and HAD to get some cannolis and a carrot cake cupcakes...all of which were D-LISH!  We took it easy Sunday afternoon and went to church at our normal evening time.  Both nights we watched movies so the boys could have some rest time.  Monday morning the boys got back to work by putting the grout on which was the last part!  We think the end product was FABULOUS!  I love it and we are very appreciative towards my parents for their generosity.

  1. Oh MY that polka dot outfit is too much. Nice backsplash too, but as usual, Grace steals the spotlight.
